Forry Ackerman walked into the First World Science Fiction Convention in 1939 wearing a home-made costume inspired by "Things to Come". The rest is history.
We love costumes, those who wear them and thus encourage costumery at Xanadu Las Vegas. Here are a few guidelines:
Costumes at Xanadu Las Vegas are broken into two categories: "Hall Costume" and "Costume Extravaganza".
HALL COSTUMES
These can be patterned from any source, including your imagination but must be practical, non-edible, well constructed and suitable as clothing. Nothing must fall off, rub off, be dangerous or smell. These costumes may be worn any time of the day or night during the convention.
COSTUME EXTAVAGANZA!
Love to strut your stuff in your most far-out duds? Our stage is the place to do so whether your costume is based on your favorite movie, book or nightmare! If you have questions, please contact ME. Must be at least 18 years of age and prepared to strut your stuff in front of your admiring fans! Your costume must fit through a normal doorway, may not be more than 7 foot tall, fall apart nor show anything that isn't normally visable on a public beach. . . . You might also consider the time tested:
Here's how it works (it says here). You will downloadand print your costume ID sheet (or pick one up at the convention). It will identify you and your costume with a brief description which you have clearly lettered by hand.
As you wait in line back stage, consider what you are about to do in front of an audience. This is a visual show, there will be no micophones! Handing your form to the host, he will begin reading. . . YOU'RE ON!! When done, scoot offstage to the thunderous applause of hundreds of admiring onlookers. Once off-stage, if you wish, you may move to the photo area to please the paparazzi.
AWARDS
This Costume Extravaganza will be judged by our Guests of Honor who will decide on winners in the categories of: First, Second and Third Prize, plus Best of Show! And yes, there will be ribbons.
By participating in any costumery during Xanadu Las Vegas, you agree to abide by these rules and Nevada Laws.
By attending these events, you give your permission to have your picture taken by anybody to do with what they will.
